What is Injection Molding?

Injection molding is the process of injecting molten plastic or metal feedstock into a mold cavity under high pressure, allowing the material to cool and solidify into the desired shape. It is the most widely used manufacturing process for producing high volumes of identical plastic parts with exceptional repeatability.

The process is highly versatile — supporting a vast range of thermoplastic and thermoset materials, complex geometries, tight tolerances, and various surface finishes. From tiny medical components to large automotive panels, injection molding delivers consistent quality at scale.

At SHBD Metal, we combine advanced injection molding machinery with decades of tooling expertise to produce parts that meet the most demanding specifications.

What is Injection Molding?

Our Injection Molding Process

1

Part Design

Refine your part design with DFM analysis, optimize gate location, draft angles, and wall thickness for manufacturability.

2

Tooling Fabrication

Machine precision mold tooling in aluminum (rapid) or hardened steel (production) per SPI classification standards.

3

Material Selection & Injection

Select the optimal material from 100+ grades. Molten material is injected into the mold cavity under controlled pressure and temperature.

4

Cooling & Ejection

The molten plastic cools and solidifies inside the mold, then ejector pins push the finished part out of the cavity.

5

Finishing & QC

Post-mold operations including trimming, surface finishing, assembly, and rigorous quality inspection before shipment.

SPI Mold Classification

Select the right tooling class for your production run. SPI standards define mold durability and expected cavity life.

Class Description Material Cavity Life Best For
101Premium Production MoldHardened Tool Steel1,000,000+ cyclesHigh-volume, tight-tolerance production
102Standard Production MoldHardened Tool Steel500,000–1,000,000 cyclesMedium-to-high volume production
103Bridge/Prototype MoldAluminum or Soft Steel100,000–500,000 cyclesLow-to-medium volume, bridge tooling
104Rapid Prototype MoldAluminum500–10,000 cyclesPrototypes, test runs, small batches

Tail Light Injection Molding Project

Automotive Tail Light Housing

Rapid tooling production

SHBD Metal manufactured a complete tail light assembly using rapid aluminum tooling. The project required precision optical-grade surfaces, complex internal geometry for LED mounting, and strict dimensional accuracy for sealed assembly.

The tool was fabricated in 12 business days, with T1 samples delivered in 15 days. The customer approved the first samples with minor cosmetic adjustments, and full production of 300 units was completed within 3 weeks.

Injection Molding FAQ

What is the typical lead time for injection molding?
Lead times depend on tooling complexity and part volume. Aluminum rapid tooling can produce T1 samples in 5–15 business days. Production steel tooling typically requires 4–8 weeks. Production lead time after tooling approval is usually 2–4 weeks.
What is the difference between aluminum and steel tooling?
Aluminum tooling is lower cost and faster to machine, making it ideal for prototyping and low-volume production (up to 10,000 cycles). Steel tooling is more durable, rated for 500,000+ cycles, and better suited for high-volume production and tight-tolerance parts.
Do you offer design for manufacturability (DFM) feedback?
Yes. Our engineering team provides comprehensive DFM analysis for every project before tooling begins. We review wall thickness, draft angles, gate location, rib design, and material selection to optimize your part for injection molding.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
There is no minimum order quantity. We support projects ranging from 10 prototype parts to millions of production units. Start small, validate your design, and scale up as needed.
Can I get samples before mass production?
Absolutely. We provide T1 (first trial) samples for all injection molding projects. Once you review and approve the samples, we proceed with full production. Additional sample iterations are available if adjustments are needed.
What file formats do you accept?
We accept STEP (.stp), IGES (.igs), Parasolid (.x_t), SolidWorks (.sldprt), and STL (.stl) file formats. For DFM review, please include your 3D CAD model and any 2D drawings with critical tolerances marked.
