CNC Machining Design Guidelines

Follow these best practices to optimize your designs for CNC machining and reduce production costs.

Minimum Wall Thickness

Metals: Minimum 0.8 mm for aluminum, 1.0 mm for steel and stainless steel, 0.5 mm for brass and copper.

Plastics: Minimum 1.5 mm for most plastics, though thicker walls (2–3 mm) are recommended for rigidity and to prevent vibration during machining.

Internal Cavities & Pockets

For internal cavities, depth should not exceed 4× the tool diameter. Use standard end mill sizes (ø1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 mm) for cost-effective machining. Avoid sharp internal corners—specify a corner radius at least 1/3 of cavity depth.

Holes & Threads

Use standard drill sizes for holes. Minimum hole diameter is 0.5 mm (drilled) and 2.5 mm (threaded). Thread depth should be at least 1.5× the thread diameter for strength. For blind threaded holes, add 3–5 mm of extra depth at the bottom.

Tolerances & Surface Finish

Only specify tight tolerances where functionally necessary—every additional precision requirement increases cost. Default machining tolerance is ±0.1 mm. Surface finish Ra 1.6 µm is standard; Ra 0.4 µm and below requires additional post-processing.

Undercuts & Complex Features

Undercuts require specialized tooling or EDM, increasing cost. Design undercuts with standard tool sizes when possible. For complex 3D features, 5-axis machining is recommended. Avoid features deeper than 6× the tool diameter without special considerations.
