Stainless steel offers improved corrosion resistance compared to its standard steel counterparts, thanks to the addition of chromium alloys. Precise mixtures of alloys in different stainless steel grades provide higher heat treatability and machinability, with unique properties to suit every application.
An age-hardened stainless steel alloy with excellent tensile strength, wear resistance, and high hardness, frequently used in aerospace components, medical instruments, and valves, as well as hand tools and fasteners. It offers a good combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent toughness.
17-4 PH (precipitation-hardening) stainless steel offers a combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent toughness. It is widely used in aerospace, chemical processing, petrochemical, and food processing industries. Its ability to be heat-treated to various strength levels makes it highly versatile for CNC machining applications.
18-8 stainless steel (type 302/304) is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel, containing approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and high strength. Its excellent weldability and machinability make it a popular choice for a vast range of applications including kitchen equipment, chemical containers, and architectural components.
Type 303 is the most machinable of the austenitic stainless steels. It contains added sulfur and phosphorus to improve chip formation and surface finish during machining operations. It offers good corrosion resistance and is ideal for high-speed automatic screw machine operations. Common applications include fittings, pins, nuts, bolts, shafts, and gears.
Type 304 is the most versatile and widely used stainless steel grade. It offers excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments, good formability, and excellent weldability. 304 is the standard grade for food processing equipment, kitchen appliances, chemical containers, and architectural trim.
Type 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. The addition of molybdenum provides superior corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and other industrial solvents. 316 is widely used in marine environments, chemical processing equipment, pharmaceutical equipment, medical implants, and food processing applications.
Type 416 is a martensitic stainless steel with the highest machinability of all stainless steels. It contains phosphorus and sulfur additions to improve chip formation. It offers moderate corrosion resistance and high strength. 416 is magnetic and can be heat treated to achieve high hardness.
Type 420 is a hardenable martensitic stainless steel that offers good corrosion resistance and very high strength and hardness after heat treatment. It is commonly used for cutlery, surgical instruments, scissors, needle valves, and other applications requiring wear resistance and moderate corrosion resistance.
Type 440C is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel that provides the highest hardness and wear resistance of all standard stainless steel grades. After heat treatment, it can reach Rockwell C 58-62, making it suitable for bearing components, cutting tools, knives, valve seats, and other high-wear applications.
Type 410 is the most widely used of the hardenable martensitic stainless steels. It offers good corrosion resistance combined with high strength and hardness after heat treatment. It is magnetic and can be easily machined in the annealed condition. Common applications include valve components, pump shafts, fasteners, bushings, and structural components for the oil & gas industry.

SHBD Metal provides multiple finishing options for stainless steel parts to meet your appearance, performance, and corrosion protection requirements.
The standard as-machined finish preserves the natural surface texture left by cutting tools. Visible tool marks may be present. This economical option is suitable for parts where surface appearance is not critical. Surface roughness typically ranges from Ra 1.6–3.2 μm.
Bead blasting creates a uniform matte or satin surface texture by bombarding the part with fine glass or ceramic beads under pressure. It removes light surface imperfections and produces a consistent, non-reflective finish ideal for industrial and functional components.
Powder coating applies a durable, protective layer of colored thermoplastic or thermoset polymer to stainless steel parts. Available in a wide range of colors and textures, it provides excellent corrosion protection, impact resistance, and an attractive appearance.
Anodizing is an electrochemical process that thickens the natural oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel parts. It enhances corrosion resistance, improves wear resistance, and allows for a variety of colored finishes while maintaining the metallic substrate properties.
Stainless steel CNC components serve critical functions across industries from aerospace to mold making and tooling.
