Aluminum's History and How It Is Produced

Humans have worked with aluminum compounds for centuries, but obtaining the pure metal itself only became possible in the 1800s. The English scientist Sir Humphry Davy proposed the name "aluminum" in 1807; Danish physicist Hans Christian Ørsted later managed to produce a crude version in 1825, and Friedrich Wöhler achieved the first truly pure sample in 1827. It was the Hall-Héroult process, introduced in 1886, that changed everything by delivering an electrolytic method cheap and scalable enough for industry.

The Natural Occurrence And Production Of Aluminum

  1. Mining Bauxite: Despite how common the element is, aluminum never occurs in nature as a pure metal. Bauxite ore is the main commercial source, packed with aluminum oxides.
  2. Refining by the Bayer Process: The crushed ore is treated with caustic soda to dissolve its alumina content. After the impurities are filtered away, alumina (Al2O3) is precipitated and calcined. Roughly two to three tonnes of bauxite are needed to produce a single tonne of alumina.
  3. Smelting, the Hall-Héroult Process: Alumina is dissolved in molten cryolite so it melts at a lower temperature, then the bath is electrolyzed inside a steel cell lined with carbon. The electric current separates the alumina into aluminum ions, which sink to the cathode, while the released oxygen combines with the carbon anodes and leaves as carbon dioxide.
